    Hilliar
I am researching my grandfather's life.
    His name was Robert Hilliar.
19800801 he was born in Carcoar NSW on 1 Aug 1880.
He went to school at Wolaroi College in Orange.
1899 He joined the CBC in
1899 and his first posting was Campbelltown then
    Gunning in 1902,
    Finley, 1913 then
    Newcastle 1914 -? and
    Bundarra from 1920 -1925.
1930 he was at Head Office in Martin Place Sydney 1930 - until
1946 August his retirement as Head Teller in Aug. 1946.
    1960 he died in 1960.
1902 Robert was picked to play on the wing for the NSW Rugby Tour to New Zealand.
He was apparently told it was
    - The Bank or Rugby
    - or words to that effect and withdrew from the team.
Things indeed are very different today!

1920 I have 2 photos of the Bank in Bundarra taken in 1920.
One has a group of people in front including
my grandfather who, the Sands Directory says, was Bank Manager there at the time.

I contacted the NAB archives who had no further information as apparently their archives are incomplete.
I was wondering if you could suggest any other sources as I would like to try and fill in the blanks in his service.?
The image of the group outside the bank at Bundarra shows Robert Hilliar on the left holding the baby (my father Bruce Stanley ).
Beside her is his wife (Wilhelmina).
My father said Robert Hilliar volunteered ,
with his cousin, Stanley Hope Pierce, to serve in the Boer War.
Robert had pneumonia prior to the volunteers leaving and did not go.
Stanley went and "did well".(I checked Stanley's war record and this was true.)
My father was partly named for him.
I also wondered if the CBC paid a pension to retiring officers?
I would really appreciate any advice or help you can give me.
    All the best, Wendy Kuipers

    MIDDLETON Beatrice (Betty), nee Stein:-
(51, 1925/6 born, one year behind Bill Frost at Grenfell School
    worked at CBC Grenfell,
then in Personnel Department at Head Office until
    19700801 (Horse's birthday) their marriage
    1970/71
They lived in a unit at North Sydney

late 1971 they had son Scott Campbell Middleton at Paddington Womens Hospital

2000s no response to Seasons Greetings sent to 3 Murray Av Forster 2428

2009 Australian Electoral Office searches have revealed nothing for Middleton Betty

so is Betty now using a surname other than Middleton ? Ed : No see below

    Bill Frost said 20090615 approx:-

    1. Betty (Beatrice) Stein was one class behind Bill Frost at Grenfell school

    2. Bill Frost turned 85 early June 2009 so Betty now would be aged about 84 & certainly not aged 85 in 2004 (as in below)

The following is not Betty Middleton nee Stein :-
    20040825 Betty Stein Middleton

died on 25th August 2004 aged 85, late of Manly

    (20040828 Manly Daily)
12 Middleton Colin Stein died age 85 late of Ellagowan via Casino

    19930614 SMH

apparently this indicates these Middletons are different to sons of KW Middleton so the above Betty Stein Middleton is not the widow of A C Middleton

Aust Elect Office (AEO) search 20090618Thur revealed:-

Middleton Beatrice 1/19 Loxton Av Grafton 2460

19301105/19301205 born at Kempsey the only son of a Dairy Farmer

  • Adrian attended primary school at Austral Eden
  • Adrian attended High School in Kempsey

  • Early in his life Adrian suffered from Rheumatic Fever which left him with a slight heart murmur and this combined with severe floods which inundated his father's Dairy Farm and wiped out Adrian's small crops made him decide that farming was not the future life and occupation for him..

  • 19490813 As was the case with many boys with farming backgrounds he joined the service of the Commercial Banking Company of Sydney limited at Kempsey on 13th August 1949. He always maintained his love and affinity for the land and understood the problems of farmers.

  • Adrian served his banking apprenticeship at many country branches both as a full time and relieving staff member, he served in places as diverse as Moree in the North to Beckom in the South.

  • 1958 Adrian met his wife to be, Joan, on a voyage to New Zealand on board the Wanganella. A ship board romance followed

    Mosman Junction /

    Spit Junction

  • Manager
    North Sydney

  • 1977 for 8 weeks Adrian

attended the Bankers Administrative Staff College at Mt. Eliza

  • Adrian was a gentle caring and considerate man of high ideals impeccable habits and integrity who always conducted himself as a gentleman. His life was spent as a banker from the OLD SCHOOL of values and business ethics...

  • Adrian was a very caring loving devoted husband to Joan and a most caring loving and generous father and father in law to Fiona and Paul, Michael and Fiona.

  • Adrian was

married for 47 years which is testament to their enduring love and affection for each other.

  • Adrian

was very proud, loved and adored his grandchildren Sean, Jacqueline and
Fred who knew him as PA.

  • They will all miss him as much as we will and our
deep sympathy love and affection is extended to Joan and her family.

  • Adrian Served the bank for 44 years on a permanent basis and 6 years on a part time basis completing 50 years service of which 29 years was in management.
He was a dedicated thoughtful caring Banker who was always prepared to do that bit extra for his clients many of whom owe their success and prosperity to him. He worked long hours and devoted his working life to the bank ..

  • 1982 w
with the merger of the Bank with the National Bank of A'sia Ltd Adrian was appointed a Regional Lending Manager.

  • Then followed his appointment to the Bank's largest and most important suburban and regional branch Parramatta.

  • This was followed by a return to Administration as
Assistant Regional Manager Northern Beaches at Dee Why

  • then Adrian Notley went to Summer Hill,
completing his career in State Administration

  • Adrian Notley returned to the
bank for a further 6 years on
a part time basis as a Manager in
    "Property Valuations and Inspection".

  • He was a highly regarded compassionate and well respected banker by his superiors, peers ,his subordinates and all those who worked for him.

  • He was a very active Member of Rotary for 20 odd years holding down many board positions at Tumut, Drummoyne, Mosman and Parramatta but mainly as was the case with Bankers as treasurer.

  • Adrian
was a very keen a knowledgeable gardener and loved growing and propagating plants. As a testament to this there are a number of shrubs and plants in June's garden which Adrian had grown and given her.

  • Adrian and Joan were very keen and passionate overseas travellers touring to many varied and interesting parts of the World. They loved the shipboard cruises and all aspects of touring. In retirement they always endeavoured to make an annual tour to an overseas destination some of which were inspired by the National Geographic magazine to which Adrian had been a subscriber for over 50 years.

  • 20070827 died
  • 20070829
death notice appeared in Sydney Morining Herald

  • Adrian was a very brave and courageous man who fought very hard to overcome his serious and debilitating illness which started with a major operation in 2003 and then followed further surgery in 2006 finally succumbing last Monday afternoon to the effect of lung cancer. However Adrian had never been a smoker.
He was never one to complain about his misfortune and illness,
but managed to mask his pain and suffering.
I will surely miss my regular telephone conversations with Adrian and our long and regular lunches together with Joan and June when we discussed many and varied topics such as how to right the world government policy and what was wrong with the bank we knew so well.
We had many a chuckle over the places we worked and the Managers and characters that we had known together with our experiences in the bank.
When I was recovering from major illness and surgery Adrian and Joan were always there to support and encourage me,
June and I did appreciate this.
I have personally known Adrian for over 50 years and in particular the past 25 years.
He was always a good staunch loyal and compassionate friend who was more like a brother.
June and I consider that together with Joan and her family, he was an important member of our immediate family.
In closing I can only say goodbye old friend and mate we will all miss you.
Rest in Peace. Rex Ryan 31-8-2007

“I worked with John Rowlands at Seven Hills where I was Second Officer from 1962 until 1966.
"Decimal currency was introduced during that time and
"the hold up happened, which I see comments about from Colin Clark.
"If I remember correctly, the car was hit by three out of the five bullets John fired.
"The other two bullets were never found!
"Was he the last Officer to fire a Bank revolver in anger?
"I think that is quite likely!
"John was well known for his gardening, although I think Leigh was actually the worker!
"We all had to traipse up to admire the garden after it was awarded prizes in each Garden Competition,
"but that wasn't a chore, it really was magnificent!
    "John's two sons both joined CBC;
"Allan resigned many years ago but

I am writing on behalf of my wife with regard to her Father and his brothers who were with the CBC.
Susie's Father was K A Taylor, last Manager's posting at the Singleton Branch. Susie believes he had two other brothers with the CBC, namely
Taylor Neil? at Rose Bay branch around 1947/48 and another, whose name Susie does not know, who was at Haymarket Branch, early 50's.
We were wondering if it would be possible for you to let us know of their names and the branches where they worked.
We have been looking up on the inter-net but have not been able to find a list of Managers/Accountants.
Looking forward to your reply in due course.
Kind regards, John S C Capper.

    Turnbull
2008 April 11 19:00 or later I was talking to my cousin
    Jean Turnbull
who lives in Richmond NSW and she tells me that the
NAB (in the old CBC Building) is closing in Richmond.
I don't know just when the CBC opened in Richmond but I venture to suggest it
would have been over 100 years ago.
I can't imagine why they would close there.
It is a thriving & expanding town as far as I know.
Your mate John Ness might be interested in that bit of history going into oblivion.
    Incidentally she is related to
Malcolm Turnbull on her late father's side.

    R.C.G. (Dick) TANDY (28/6/08)
Les Cornell has just rung to say R.C.G. (Dick) Tandy passed away in Canberra today.
Just a short note from Roy Bloomfield to let you know that one of our old officers passed away yesterday (28/6/2008) after a battle with prostate cancer. Dick had a long career with the CBC. He last few years with the Bank was on the Relieving staff and the Audit Staff before retiring in 1982. Dick's funeral will be at St John's Reid (Canberra) tomorrow at 1400 hrs. Thought some of the old CBC'ers may like to know.
John B advises: Richard Charles Graham Tandy's service is at St John the Baptist Church, Reid on 1st July. No flowers donations to Prostate Cancer Research & Support. Dick was an auditor who joined the bank around 1940, WWII 2/110 A.G.T. Platoon, retired about 1981.
    Kaye Slack-Smith (nee Marshall) notes:
I travelled with Dick to Lithgow Branch many years ago,
as his clerk to ascertain how much
one of the tellers had stolen by
    suppressing Savings Bank Deposits!!!!
In recent years I have had him as
a patient in the Canberra Hospital
    on quite a few occasions,
always cheerful and in my roll as an Anglican Chaplain,
I was to have many talks with him,
and touch on our CBC Bank days.
During his last visit he asked me
to give all his mates "A Hi!" from him
    via the Newsletter.
Kaye also sent in this clipping from
the Uni of the 3rd Age in Canberra:
Farewell to a good friend of U3A
Since our last edition of the Newsletter, a good friend of U3A,
Dick Tandy, has died. His name won't be familiar to many because, for as long as he was a member, Dick never attended a class or went to any other of our functions. Not even those designed to say 'thank you' to our volunteers.
But volunteers who worked in the office certainly knew him. For as long as he was a member, Dick would religiously turn up at Hughes almost every day of the year — an incredible effort — to collect the money and cheques from membership renewals, note who'd paid their subs, then he would do the banking. This took a lot of the work —and pressure — off Warren Turton, our membership secretary, especially at that time of the year when subscriptions were due.
Dick had his reasons for not undertaking any courses, not the least of which was his health, but almost to the end he refused to 'take it easy', insisting he could still make himself useful.
In another life, Dick had been both a bank manager and bank auditor so few were better skilled to do this work. A creature of habit, he seldom missed a WW2 Army reunion in Sydney on ANZAC day, enjoying the opportunity to catch up with old colleagues. He loved trains and travelled widely in them, especially the old steam ones, while for several years he was an Explainer in Charge at Questacon when it was based at the old Ainslie Infants School.
His church meant a lot to Dick too, and it was appropriate that his family and many friends gathered at Canberra's historic St John's, Reid, to say their farewells. Dorothy Braxton

the Central Coast passed away 31st July 2008.

    Tom WATERHOUSE
John Searle advised:- "I would like to say a few words about Tom,
so perhaps you, or the President, might read the following:-
“Tom and I had somewhat parallel, though widely apart, lives.
1919 Tom was born, he was 3 months younger than I,
and no doubt would have joined the CBC Bank, and retired from it at about the same time.
19400529 date of enlistment in the
2nd AIF one day after mine, but he had an Army number
    3400 lower than mine
    - we were both drafted to the same unit
    –the 2/13th Infantry Battalion.
We never worked together in the CBC Bank,
and we were never close to each other in our war time days.
There may be some members present who worked in the Bank with Tom -
I think his Bank service would have been
very largely in the Sydney Metropolitan area.
He retired from Manager MIRANDA Branch,
and it was only in my last couple of years,
in Personnel Department, that we came
anywhere near each other. In the Army Tom was in our
Mortar Platoon, and I was in a Rifle Company.
However we knew of each other as
having been in the CBC, and after the war,
    despite never being geographically close,
    became firm friends.
"1960 approximately I well remember Tom and his
Wife, Mary, calling on us when we were in Mudgee
    – about 1960 it would have been.
"1982 I had very few years in Sydney before
I retired in 1982, and it was not until our
Army Reunions after that time that we
saw much of each other. Tom’s wife, Mary,
developed mobility problems at a relatively
early age, and Tom became her full time
Carer for many years, which limited his movements greatly.
?2008? May Mary died 3 months before Tom.
However we maintained frequent contact via
the telephone, especially over the past couple years.
    "?2008? August died
"?2008? 0830 Tuesday with 5 other army mates
of Tom John Searle was able to attend his
funeral service at Sutherland and at the
invitation of the Family spoke on behalf of the Battalion and the CBC Bank."

    WINCKLE Norman Edward McCurdy :-
WINCKLE Arthur (teacher in charge of local single teacher school) married Mary Elizabeth "Bessie" McCurdy who had a son and then another son :-
19181217 Norman Edward McCurdy Winckle was born at Mooroopna Victoria.
1920s in the early 1920s Arthur Winckle secured a move to Elwood Primary School in Melbourne. By working in the post office in school holidays and taking in private pupils after hours Arthur and Bessie were able to give their children a good education. Norman was sent to Caulfield Grammar before completing his schooling at the prestigious Wesley College. He learned to play the violin and showed an early aptitude for mathematics.
For a lad of such a background there was no thought of going to the university when 1934 he left school at the age of 16 in the middle of the depression.
1934 he joined the Commercial Banking Company of Sydney Limited at Swanson Street branch. He studied accountancy at night and over the next few years worked in branches around Victoria before
1940 being promoted to the Melbourne Office aged 22.
When the Japanese entered the WW2 he enlisted in the 2nd AIF .He was commissioned as a lieutenant and placed in charge of a mortar platoon where his mathematical skills could be used to great advantage. Norman served with the 8th Australian Infantry Battalion in Darwin, the Pacific Islands, especially Bougainville, and in New Guinea .
    1946 April Norm was discharged.
Norm returned to his old job with the CBC of Sydney with whom he was to remain for the rest of his working life.
Using the opportunities given to veterans he secured a place in Melbourne University and studying at night
1949 Norm completed his Batchelor of Commerce Degree.
Capable and gregarious he advanced in the bank and in
1950 March was sent to London. After eighteen months of travel and work in Europe
1951 September approximately he was recalled to Australia to set up the bank's first Economic Department at its head office in Sydney.
1953 Norm married June Manning and together they raised three children...Judith, Gail and Philip. Norm was a family man. Norm and June raised three children...Judith, Gail and Philip. Like his father Philip has pursued a career in Banking while Gail is Deputy Head of Gordon Public School.
Like his father Philip has pursued a career in Banking while Gail is Deputy Head of Gordon Public School.
1957 Norman was promoted to Inspector and was given the task of setting up CBC's first Savings Bank.

    "Recent Appointments"
    "N E M Winckle MO"
1965 the death of the Victorian General Manager saw a transfer to Melbourne to head up that office but by
1968 it was time to return to Sydney and set up the bank's finance company...CAGA.
His entrepreneurial career with CBC also included establishing their joint venture Merchant Bank, Commercial Continental Limited, and organising its first ever computer system at StLeonards.
1972 he joined the Board as one of the three top executives.
1976 the recession and property market collapse necessitated drastic changes at CAGA.
Norman was sent by the Board to rescue the company he had founded.
A slow but successful recovery was achieved.
1978 Norman was made Deputy CEO of the Bank in 1978 and
1981 retired in 1981 at the age of 63.
Norm & his wife had 6 grandchildren.
He held directorships in several listed Companies and served for a time on the Board of the NRMA.
Norm was a devout Anglican and served for many years on the management committee of St. Martins, Killara. He was typically to be found at the church door welcoming new arrivals.
A keen Rotarian , a highlight of his career was the Presidency of Sydney Rotary in the early eighties.
He was for several years on the Board of Royal Prince Alfred Hospital chiefly in, the capacity of Treasurer
(no doubt related to his position with the Bank.)
He was interested in sport and in his early days was in the Bank's rowing team. In later life his passion was lawn bowls and he was for many years a member of
    Killara Bowling Club.
Such was his esteem in the club that for several years he was made club Patron.
He devoted his considerable talents supporting charities such as the Chatswood Sheltered Industries .
And of course there was freemasonry!
He was initiated in Lodge Elwood No 283 (Victorian Constitution) on 1st August 1946. Passed (7/11/1946)and raised (1/5/1947) in the same lodge he was eventually forced to call off (31/12/1953) due to his move to NSW.
In Sydney he initially affiliated with Lodge Antiquity (No1) but called off in favour of Lodge Frank McDowell ( No789) which was much closer to home.
His affiliation with Frank McDowell took place on 19/11/1956 and he remained in that lodge through it's various "Lives" ever since.
His business commitments both in Australia and overseas had prevented him from taking the chair but finally settling back into Sydney in the late 1960's he was made Senior Warden in 1971/72 and Worshipful Master in 1972/1973.
Following consolidation with Lodge Lindfield in 1989 (21/8/1989) he again served as WM for the 1990/1991 Masonic Year. Over the years Norm held several positions in the lodge and was always ready to fill in when required. He was responsible for the introduction of- The Toast to Absent Brethren- and was the first to volunteer when a Caring Officer was required.
For his Services to the Freemasonry he was awarded the conferred Grand Lodge rank of Past District Grand Inspector of Workings on 8/3/1995.
Norm remained an active member of Lodge Frank McDowell Lindfield until its consolidation with Lodges Kiffara and Saves in the formation of Lodge Ku-ring-gai( No1033 ). This occurred on 16/7/2004. He was of course a foundation member. Typically Norm became one of the Caring Officers.
I should also mention that he affiliated with Sydney Lodge (No 1020) on
19970607 but called off on 28/2/2005.
But it was in Christian Freemasonry that Norman really made his mark....
19580825 Norm was perfected in Avery Chapter. After completing his interstate commitments he was enthroned as Most Wise Sovereign of that chapter on 24/8/1970. He received the 30th Degree on 29/1/1972 and the 31st Degree on 16/2/1980.
Then came a major promotion when on 27/8/1984 he was elevated by the Supreme Council to the 33rd Degree and appointed District Commander for the District of Sydney Northern. During his term of office the Sydney Northern SC was consecrated and naturally he was a foundation member.
But higher duties awaited ! On 11/10/1988 he was elected to The Supreme Council of the Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite for Australia, the Order's Governing Body. Here he served for the next nine years successively occupying the positions of Grand Prior, Lieutenant Grand Commander and ultimately Sovereign Grand Commander (Head of the Order in this country ). In this capacity he travelled widely representing the Rite both here and overseas. His three year term completed he stood down on 30/6/1997 but was immediately elected an Honorary Member of that August Body.
Norm remained a member of Avery Chapter through it's various consolidations (Avery/Vigil and now Mystic Rose No23 formed by the consolidation of Avery/Vigil with Sydney St James/St Ives). He was also a member of Collaroy Daylight Chapter(218) and of several Councils including Sydney Northern, Prince Charles Edward Stuart, Collaroy Daylight and Melbourne SC.
Norm lived his Freemasonry!! It was so typical of him to be a Caring Officer and to initiate the toast to absent brethren.
Mr. Winckle had been suffering from osteoporosis and was virtually unable to move around
    20070706 Friday Mr. Winckle died.
At his request the family had a private funeral. He would not have wanted to make a fuss!!
V Wor Bro Norman Edward McCurdy Winkle certainly lived respected. His passing is a loss to us all.
